Bisbee’s nonprofits to help the homeless face uncertain future

Cochise Harm Reduction (CHR) plays a vital role in Cochise County, providing essential services to the unhoused and those struggling with addiction. Lu Funk, CHR’s executive director, expressed deep concern about potential funding cuts, stating, “There are a lot of potential impacts. We were told a lot of grant funds are on hold.”

Funk highlighted the critical nature of their services, especially during harsh weather conditions, saying, “We worry about those older folks when it’s 15 degrees Fahrenheit. We haven’t had any fatalities we know of this year.” The organization faces a dire situation, with Funk warning, “We may have to shut down if the funding is denied.” CHR relies heavily on federal funding, which accounts for about 75% of their budget, making them particularly vulnerable to potential cuts.
