Local nonprofit receives needed funding for food, Begins new program to build mental health component

Cochise Harm Reduction (CHR), founded and led by Lu Funk, has overcome funding challenges to continue supporting unhoused individuals and those struggling with addiction in Bisbee and across Cochise County. After federal cuts threatened outreach programs, CHR secured $50,000 annually through the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona, enabling them to provide hot meals, hygiene products, clothing, and harm reduction supplies like clean needles and naloxone. In 2024, CHR distributed over 17,000 hot meals, with plans to serve 25,000 in 2025. Their work is grounded in a nonjudgmental, peer-led approach, with staff who have lived experience in addiction and recovery.

Reflecting on their mission, Funk said, “We believe all humans deserve access to food, housing, and medical supplies to reduce the harms of drug use, community care, and purpose.” CHR is launching a Peer Navigator Program to offer one-on-one support and welcomes donations, gently used clothing, and volunteers.
