Cochise survey seeks input for opioid settlement fund spending

The Cochise County Health and Social Services Department has released a survey to determine how to allocate recent opioid settlement funds effectively. Alicia Thompson, former director of the department, emphasized the importance of meeting the county’s specific needs. The county is receiving payments from multiple opioid lawsuits, with each settlement having its own terms

Thompson highlighted the lack of a detox center as a significant issue in Cochise County, stating, “If I could wave my magic wand and have everyone decide how to use these funds in the best way for our community, it would be to create and develop a detox center”. She stressed the importance of immediate support for those seeking to overcome addiction.

Harm reduction is another crucial aspect of addressing the opioid epidemic. Cochise Harm Reduction, a nonprofit organization, provides services such as rapid HIV and Hepatitis C testing, needle exchange programs, and naloxone distribution. Lu Funk, the founder and director, reported that from May 2022 to May 2023, they distributed 125,000 sterile syringes, over 900 Sharps containers, and almost 10,000 doses of naloxone throughout the county. The survey, open until July 3, aims to gather input from all community members to address the opioid problem effectively. The county is considering various options for fund allocation, including treatment, prevention, and support for those in recovery.
