Arizona State University’s Southwest Interdisciplinary Research Center featured Cochise Harm Reduction (CHR) for National Nonprofit Day 2025.
The piece highlights how CHR was born after Executive Director Lu Funk lost a friend in the Arizona desert, a loss that underscored the need for a mobile harm reduction program that could meet people where they are. “The more someone is struggling, the less likely they are to seek help and support,” Lu shared, emphasizing why CHR brings services directly to people instead of waiting for them to reach out.
The feature also uplifts the resilience and compassion within drug-using communities, even as stigma continues to isolate them. CHR’s work includes creating low-barrier employment opportunities, ensuring those most impacted by housing instability and substance use can earn income, find purpose, and belong. Current needs are especially pressing during Arizona’s monsoon season, when tents, tarps, and dry clothing become essential. Community members are encouraged to get involved by donating items, funds, or volunteering to support CHR’s mission
