Cochise Harm Reduction (CHR), founded by Lu Funk, has grown from a grassroots effort into a vital resource for those struggling with addiction and homelessness in Cochise County, Arizona. Funk, drawing from personal experience, started the organization with “a shoestring budget and heart,” evolving it into a comprehensive harm reduction program.”
I had no idea it was going to go like this. But, that speaks to the need,” Funk reflects on CHR’s rapid growth. The organization provides essential services including needle exchange, naloxone distribution, and mobile outreach to rural areas.
CHR’s success is attributed to its mobile approach and peer-support model. “Everyone who works here has some connection to them,” Funk explains, highlighting how this builds trust with participants. The organization’s impact is evident in the community’s response, with participants referring to CHR as “the people’s people.”
Funk emphasizes the unique challenges of rural harm reduction, stating, “We’re pioneering rural harm reduction efforts, which are rare compared to urban programs.” Despite obstacles, CHR continues to expand its services, aiming to address not only immediate needs but also underlying issues of addiction and homelessness in Cochise County.
